Basilica Cistern

Address: Alemdar, Yerebatan Cd. 1/3, 34110 Fatih/İstanbul, Turkey.

The Basilica Cistern, known as “Yerebatan Sarnici” in Turkish, is a captivating underground reservoir built in 532 AD under Emperor Justinian I. This architectural wonder is supported by 336 marble columns, with two featuring intricately carved Medusa heads as their base. The cistern was originally constructed to store water for the Great Palace and nearby buildings, drawing its supply from the Belgrade Forest. Visitors can stroll along the walkways, soaking in the mystical ambiance of dim lighting, echoed footsteps, and gently rippling water.
